Toyota set to implement green fleet for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

When you turn on your TV to watch the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games next year, you won’t just be seeing history made on the field, but off it as well.

Toyota, the worldwide partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, have announced that the fleet of cars to be used at the Tokyo games will be electrified.

The goal for Toyota is to achieve the lowest emissions target level of any fleet used at an Olympic or Paralympic game and greatly reduce the environmental impact of the games in the process.

Of the 3,700 vehicles that Toyota will provide for the duration of the games, 90% will be electric. The range will include models from their Hybrid Electric Vehicle fleet (HEV), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) such as the Mirai, Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV) like the Prius Prime and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) including the Accessible People Mover and the e-Palette. Toyota will also introduce the Concept-i, which has been developed uniquely for the purpose of the games.

Early estimations suggest that the carbon emissions produced by the fleet will average less than 80g/km, nearly half of the amount typically produced by a fleet of this size.

Additionally, all vehicles in the fleet will be fitted with Toyota’s latest preventative safety technologies, including “Toyota Safety Sense” and Lexus Safety System+” to prevent collisions and mitigate potential injuries. Vehicles will also be equipped with the latest braking technology, “Intelligent Clearance Sonar”.

The Toyota technology on display won’t just be limited to cars at the games either, with innovations such as the SORA fuel-cell bus and fuel-cell forklifts also set to be used during the games.

This announcement comes as part of Toyota’s three pillar approach to Tokyo 2020. 1. Mobility for all, allowing freedom to move. 2. Sustainability, centring on the realisation of a hydrogen society. And 3. Transportation support for the games using Toyota technology.

Toyota plans to support the smooth transportation process of all staff, athletes and visitors, as well as provide a unique, exciting experience for everyone to align with the thrilling competition set to take place.
