Tesla teases surprise new model

Tesla has teased a surprise new model that will be unveiled at the Grand Basel motor show in Switzerland this week.

The teaser image has set Tesla-watching tongues wagging, with enthusiasts suggesting the aggressively contoured lines could belong to the brand’s much-hyped Roadster, which was revealed in prototype form last year.

The teaser image was sent as part of an invitation to select Tesla owners, inviting them to enter a competition to win tickets to the unveiling on September 5.

If the Roadster lives up to its own hype, it promises to be one hell of a machine. In unveiling the prototype, company founder Elon Musk promised it would arrive with a 200kWh battery pack, delivering a range of around 1000kms, and would be able to rocket to 60mph (around 96.5km/h) in just 1.9 seconds – and that was just the base model…

Musk promised the two-door, four-seat Roadster, which is scheduled for a 2020 roll-out, would “give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars” and would be the “fastest production car ever”.
