Self-driving cars won’t be dominating the road for some time
According to Uber, one of its biggest investments, self-driving cars, won’t be ready for a wide-scale deployment for quite some time.
Raquel Urtasun, chief scientist at Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) has said, “Self-driving cars are going to be in our lives. The question of when is not clear yet”.
Uber who is seen as a leader in autonomous technology has only recently adopted a more cautious tone regarding self-driving cars after one of its autonomous SUVs killed a pedestrian in Arizona last year.
This new approach also mirrors the rest of the self-driving industry, who appear unanimously coy about expectations for timelines, stating there is too many uncertainties in the industry to know for sure.
Despite the uncertainty around the timeline, Uber continues to invest huge amounts of funding and resources into self-driving cars with some considering Uber’s ability to successfully navigate the transition through self-driving cars crucial to their long term success.
