Pilot Phase Begins For VW DC Wallbox Tech
Volkswagen Group Components has launched its DC wallbox product for EV charging. The wallbox can be charged with direct current (DC) up to 22kW and works at double the speed of a typical wallbox working with alternating current (AC).
In charging technology based on direct current, the electricity flows directly into the lead traction battery, provided that the electric vehicle features a combined charging system (CCS) charging port. Charging the lead traction battery with a direct current increases the potential charging capacity when compared with alternating current and shortens the charging process.
VW says the DC wallbox will be prepared for bi-directional charging – an increasingly talked about technology for feeding power back into an EV owner’s home or the electrical grid.
Volkswagen Group Components has started the pilot phase at its own factory sites in Germany as part of a pilot phase. The company says its goal is to gather practical experience prior to then move into series production.
