Nikola break ground on advanced battery cell technology

Hybrid truck design start-up, Nikola Motor Company has developed a battery for electric vehicles (EVs) that will revolutionize the automotive industry according to a recent announcement from the American company.

Nikola have stated that they will unveil the ‘game-changing’ battery cell technology at the Nikola World event in the US Autumn 2020.

While the current size of EV batteries allows vehicles to travel up to approximately 500km, Nikola believes the new technology they have developed will provide up to 1000 km of charge with minimal changes made to battery size and weight.

The company also believes that their new technology will be easier to recycle and is far more environmentally friendlier than what is currently available.

Nikola Motor Company CEO, Trevor Milton, was fully of acclamation for the breakthrough by his team.

“This is the biggest advancement we have seen in the battery world,” said Milton.

“We are not talking about small improvements; we are talking about doubling the range of BEVs and hydrogen-electric vehicles around the world.”

Nikola will now enter the next stage of development, signalling their intent to bring in a world-class engineering team to take the battery to pre-production.

15 PhDs and five master’s degree personnel will be acquired to work on the project. However, due to confidentiality and security reasons, details will not be disclosed until the Nikola World event later next year.

Nikola also believe the technology could lead to a breakthrough in hydrogen-electric fuel cell trucks as well. It is estimated that the trucks could travel up to 1600 kms on a single tank and refuel in 15 minutes with the new technology.

Because Nikola view their latest breakthrough as having great potential to impact society, they will now share their intellectual property (IP) with competing manufacturers.

“Nikola is in discussions with customers for truck orders that could fill production slots for more than ten years and propel Nikola to become the top truck manufacturer in the world in terms of revenue, now the question is why not share it with the world?” said Milton.
