Mercedes-Benz and Sila To Build Longer Range, High Silicon Batteries
Mercedes-Benz is to work with Sila, a next-generation battery materials company, to incorporate Sila’s silicon anode chemistry in its vehicles’ batteries.
The high-silicon anode material will, the company says, increase the energy density of batteries and enable a 20-40 per cent increase in energy density. This will allow more energy to be stored in the same space, increasing a vehicle’s range.
Both Mercedes-Benz and Sila are targeting mid-decade for a range-extended-version of the electric G-Class to be equipped with the new battery technology option.
Mercedes-Benz invested in Sila in 2019 as part of the company’s research and development of advanced batteries for the automaker’s future electric vehicles.
