Mando Corporation Wins Innovation Award for Steer-by-Wire Tech
Mando Corporation, the Korean auto parts manufacturer, won the Innovation Award at CES 2021 in Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation (VIT) category for its Steer-by-Wire (SbW) Steering System.
Steer-by-Wire is a pure electronic system. Turning the steering wheel sends signals to a control unit that adjusts the angle of the wheels and this allows for the traditional mechanical steering systems – and the various columns, gears and joints that they use – to be discarded.
Steer-by-wire offers packaging and weight reductions and opens up design opportunities for manufacturers. It is also considered important for the development of fully autonomous vehicles.
Mando’s system allows for the steering wheel to be ‘freely located according to the purpose of the vehicle’ and can also be designed with an ‘Auto Stow’ (take out and use when needed) function. With the steering wheel gone, cabin space can be maximised.
The core components of Mando’s SbW are designed as the ‘Dual Redundant Safety System.’ The company says that even with a single system failure, the entire system will continue to operate normally.
Mando’s SbW is expected to be mass-produced for the first time in the world in North America next year.
