Linfox to trial Australia’s first Volvo FL Electric truck

The first Volvo FL Electric Truck has arrived in Australia, with plans to undergo trial and evaluation by logistics and supply chain company Linfox.

Fitted with an eight-pallet body and tailgate lift, the first unit will be tested in metropolitan deliveries with LinFox’s leading beverage logistics business, BevChain.

“It is very clear that both our customers, and our customer’s customers, are demanding a cleaner and quieter urban transport environment,” said Tony O’Connell, Vice President of Volvo Trucks Australia.

“The electrification of our urban supply chain not only affects the local air quality of our cities, but it also has the potential to make our urban areas more liveable.”

The 4 x 2 Volvo FL Electric is powered by a 600-volt, 200kWh battery pack which powers a 200kW/425Nm motor. Power gets to the drive wheels via a two-speed I-shift automated transmission.

Peter Fox, Linfox Executive Chairman is excited by the introduction of the electric trucks, saying they will open an exciting chapter for the industry.

“Our investment in sustainable vehicles will significantly reduce our emissions in the foreseeable future,” Fox reports.

“Acting sustainably is just common sense. It is imperative to my family and our business that we preserve and protect our environment for the next generation.”

In late 2020, Volvo Trucks announced its plan to be zero-emission by 2040. It also revealed that pre-sales for its complete range of electric heavy-duty truck models would begin in 2021 for the European market, with production commencing in 2022.

Hydrogen fuel-cell technology for long haul applications will also be incorporated into Volvo’s fossil-free future, which will complement the more urban-centric electric drivelines.

“This is a very exciting time to be part of Volvo Trucks Australia,” O’Connell says.

“I look forward to seeing this truck plying the streets of an Australian capital city in the very near future.”

Linfox’s trials of the Volvo FL Electric is expected to begin in April 2021.
