April 2022 | Investigating car plastic waste as a valuable resource in Cairns

What you see in the photo above (behind me) are a whole lot of compact car bumpers ready to be turned into landfill!

Each year, at least 140,000 tons of car plastics end up in landfill around Australia. This weight equals 6% of the total plastic waste generated in the country (2.5 million tons).

Recently, I visited Nik Hoggan from the Materials Recovery Facility in Cairns to witness the excellent work they are doing. Glass, plastic bottles, and aluminium cans are being efficiently recycled, which is super exciting! However, unfortunately, car-plastic waste is still requiring an innovative recycling solution.

Together with MTA Queensland and QUT, we are researching opportunities for councils and the automotive industry to deliver innovative auto-recycling infrastructure. It can help the car wrecking and repair industries turn bumper bars into a valuable commodity that will divert waste away from landfill, increase recycling, cut emissions, and create new sustainable business opportunities.
