Hyundai unveils ultimate mobility vehicle, TIGER
Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled TIGER, the uncrewed ground excursion robot designed to carry various types of cargo while travelling across remote and inhospitable terrain.
TIGER, short for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot, is the company’s second Ultimate Utility Vehicle, following the reveal of the Elevate at the Consumer Electronic Show in 2019. Unlike Elevate, TIGER is the first to be crewless.
Designed to function as a mobile scientific exploration platform in extreme locations, TIGER features a leg and wheel locomotion system, 360-degree directional control, and a variety of sensors for remote observation. TIGER also possesses the ability to connect with unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), which can fully charge and deliver TIGER to inaccessible locations.
The vehicle will primarily move by rolling traction, similar to driving an all-wheel-drive vehicle. However, should the vehicle get stuck or need to travel over difficult terrain, it can protract its legs, and begin walking.
The exceptional blend of locomotion technologies allows TIGER to travel across terrain previously off-limits to even the most capable off-road vehicles.
These capabilities make the vehicle ideal for areas struck by a natural disaster, traversing challenging terrain, and potentially even exploring the surface of another moon or planet.
“Vehicles like TIGER, and the technologies underpinning it, give us an opportunity to push our imaginations,” said Dr. John Suh, Head of New Horizons Studio.
“We are constantly looking at ways to rethink vehicle design and development and re-define the future of transportation and mobility.”
Hyundai Motor Group’s New Horizons Studio is leading the TIGER X-1 (X stands for experiment) project, collaborating with leading engineering design software company, Autodesk.
“Working closely with the team at Hyundai on the TIGER X-1 vehicle, using advanced technology such as generative design to push the boundaries of increasing strength while reducing weight in transportation, is exactly what we mean when we talk about creating the new possible,” said Srinath Jonnalagadda, Vice President of Business Strategy for Design and Manufacturing at Autodesk.
“New design, engineering and manufacturing techniques enabled by Autodesk Fusion 360 help today’s modern, collaborative teams get to production faster and more efficiently.”
New Horizons Studio is expected to redefine vehicular mobility using a combination of robotics and wheeled technology seen in Elevate and TIGER.
