First footage of Google’s self-driving cars from 2009 released

Waymo, Google’s autonomous driving technology development company, has released the first footage of Google’s secret self-driving car project that took place in 2009.

Looking to stake their claim as a world leader in self-driving technology, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page set a team of engineers to work in early 2009 on building a vehicle that could drive without human interaction or disengagements along numerous specifically chosen 100-mile routes in California.

By December of that year, the first route had already been completed and by the middle of 2010, the project has successfully been completed.

With Waymo putting a halt to operations during COVID-19, take a look at the footage that got the company started ten years ago.

Check out the footage here.
