Electric vehicles gets Twitter influencers talking

The growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) has captured the attention of the automotive industry in recent months, with new statistics released by GlobalData revealing the topic of EVs was the most talked about theme on Twitter among automotive influencers for Q4 2019.

A leading data and analytics company, GlobalData discovered that mentions of EVs grew by more than 100 per cent quarter-on-quarter in Q4 2019, with newly released and emerging technology proving to be the key driver for the spike in conversations according to the Director of Automotive Consulting at GlobalData, Animesh Kumar.

“With electrification being a key agenda in several countries and among OEMs and with new product developments, announcements and model launches, it is not surprising that EVs emerged as the most discussed topic on Twitter,” said Animesh.

Q4 featured several big announcements by EV manufacturers, with Tesla’s November launch of the Cybertruck registering as the single biggest conversational topic for the quarter. According to GlobalData, discussions centred around the Cybertruck launch focused on the futuristic design and self-driving features of the vehicle.

Other major talking points for the quarter included BMWs launch of the i4, a premium-mid range EV, and the formal announcement of an alliance between Volkswagen and Ford to focus on autonomous and electric vehicle technology.

Tesla was far-and-away the most discussed brand for the quarter, with mentions of the Shanghai and Berlin Giga-factories joining the Cybertruck as key discussion points.

With EV technology continuing to grow its presence on the automotive scene, it is expected that discussions in the automotive industry will continue to heavily feature EVs. However, Animesh has predicted that the impact of COVID-19 may displace EVs as the number one topic of discussion, at least for Q1.

“Having said that, it would not be a surprise if the topic loses the top spot in Q1 2020. COVID-19 is disrupting the supply chain across markets and the top theme of discussion in Q1 2020 should be ‘automotive supply chain’. Since China is a major supplier of electric vehicle components and is on the forefront of battery technology, EVs will continue to be discussed even during this phase.”
