Car Sharing in Your Community

Another Aussie mobility option has entered the market which may have an impact on the current businesses operating in the car rental space. The MTAiQ innovation hub is committed to ensuring we provide the latest information on all new platforms and business models to the members of MTA Queensland and our stakeholder network.

Car Next Door is an Australian company that facilitates peer-to-peer car rental, a system by which individuals may rent privately owned vehicles on an hourly or daily basis to other registered users of the service. The concept is an example of ″collaborative consumption″, where skills and assets are shared or traded between neighbours for sustainability and economic benefit. The platform currently operates in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and most recently it launched on the Gold Coast and has announced plans to expand to other Australian cities and airports.

Car Next Door allows individuals to rent cars, utes or vans from local vehicle owners and is free to join.

There is a comprehensive amount of information on the platform including instructions for finding the car, getting the keys, returning the car and what to do if you have an accident. There are also details relating to:

  • Payment and returning of deposits;
  • How to add your vehicle to the platform;
  • Cancelling bookings;
  • Insurance; and
  • Fuel, tolls and fines.

The platform is a consumer application, but the question must be asked about its potential impact on current rental vehicle business models.
