BMW Group China teams up with Tencent for new High-Performance platform
BMW China Automotive Trading Ltd have joined together with Chinese investment company Tencent to sign an agreement to build the BMW Group China High Performance D³ platform.
The high-performance D³ platform will focus on designing and developing technology for automated driving and marks a significant milestone in the movement towards self-driving vehicles.
The platform will primarily work on developing products that will suitably handle complex traffic conditions while also meeting customer demand and improving safety standards of automated vehicles around the world.
BMW Group China and Tencent, President and CEO of BMW Group Region China, Mr. Jochen Goller, was confident the partnership would result in the two companies changing the landscape of the automated vehicle industry in China.
“China is at the forefront of automated driving development, and we aim to play a pioneering role in this area.
“The collaboration between BMW Group and Tencent will set the benchmark for cross-industry cooperation. The BMW Group High Performance D³ platform will allow us to develop autonomous driving solutions that represent a better fit for the specific driving scenarios in China.”
Tencent President, Mr. Dowson Tong, was of similar support of the partnership.
“Tencent is committed to assisting automotive companies in the digital transformation.
“The collaboration between Tencent and BMW Group has deepened over the past year or so, which proves BMW’s recognition of Tencent’s digital strength in the fields of cloud computing, big data, security and AI.
“We hope that with the continuous deepening of cooperation between the two parties we can create a new model and a new benchmark for cooperation between Chinese technology companies and international automotive companies. We also look forward to providing assistance with the localisation of international first-class automotive companies in China.”
Tencent will provide the IT architecture, tools and platforms for research and development to be used in the High Performance D³ platform.
The D³ stands for Data Driven Development, which is the type of development used to develop highly automated (level 3) and fully automated (level 4) driving functions.
The BMW Group will commence production of level 3 vehicles in the year 2021, and until then the platform will be used for safety validations of level 3 and early-stage level 4 technology.
The BMW Group China High Performance D³ platform is expected to begin operations by the end of 2019.
