Berlin’s New App With Every Mobility Option
Berlin has developed a new mobility app that will get you anywhere, without driving your own car.
The App will give you options that include bike-sharing, scooters, ride-hailing, car-pooling, car-sharing, taxis, and the entire public transportation system. You can even get tickets on the App.
The app (Jelbi) which will launch mid-year and will connect services that currently have their own Apps, which can make it difficult to plan a trip or buy tickets.
“We have eight bike- sharing companies in the market, alone,” says Christof Schminke, the managing director in Germany for Trafi, the tech company that built the platform for BVG, Berlin’s public transport company.
“I think it’s a good sign that Berlin has all the mobility options, but for every service you need a separate app on your smartphone.”
BVG wanted to become a broader mobility provider for Berlin, currently running the city’s subways, trams, buses and ferries. They wanted to get ahead of the game and could see other players starting to integrate modes of mobility. BVG could see the benefits of combining mobility options like bikes and scooters with the public transit platform.
It also means there individuals have less need to use a car and for cities, the data from the platform could also eventually lead to better transportation.
